5 Alcohol-Free Beers That Actually Taste Like Beer

It’s a rapidly-growing movement with more options on offer than ever before - but low alcohol (or alcohol-free) beer can still be hit and miss, unless you know what you’re looking for.

We’ve taken advantage of the current situation to taste our way through the back catalogue of booze-free brews, and these are our favourites. Trust us, you’ll never buy a Becks Blue again...

1. Erdinger Alkoholfrei (< 0.5%)

This is probably our first choice when it comes to alcohol free beer. It’s supremely drinkable, both lively and tasty, so a good choice for either lager fans or ale lovers. Being an ‘isotonic drink’ in its own right, this Erdinger brew has the advantage of not posing as a pale imitation of its booze-bolstered predecessor. As a Weiss (wheat) based beer, it feels like a totally different drink - rather than a ‘normal’ beer minus the alcohol - but retains most of the key elements of the experience, thus making it a great option for any sober occasion.

2. Brewdog Hazy AF (< 0.5%)

If you’re a fan of good beer and haven’t had a Brewdog creation before, you’ve been living under a rock - and missing out massively! Their alcohol free offerings are just as good as their boozy ones, with ‘Nanny State’ and a 0.5% version of their signature brew ‘Punk IPA’ both impressing. However, our favourite is the gorgeously citrusy ‘Hazy AF’ - a light yellow pale ale that brims with flavour, boasting a tanginess that almost borders on a sour, but remains easy-drinking.

3. Heineken 0.0 (0%)

Most mainstream lager makers have now joined the low alcohol market, to meet increasing demand for booze-free versions of our favourite tipples. However, these can often feel like empty imitations of the original drink, disappointing in flavour and poor alternatives to the real deal. Not this one from Heineken - it could almost pass for the usual 5% stuff. Perhaps cheating slightly, the brewers have used some extra flavourings alongside their typical ingredients to give it much more taste than your typical AF. Plus at 0.0%, it is actually entirely free of booze, so that’s an extra added bonus!

4. Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5%

Award-winning Southwold-based brewers Adnams were bound to join in the alcohol-free fun at some point, and they haven’t disappointed with this impressively tasty 0.5% pale ale. Flavoured with our favourite ‘Citra’ hops, it packs a real punch in the taste department, whilst remaining delightfully light and highly drinkable - and of course, (effectively) free of alcohol. So you can drink away to your heart’s content! Probably the pick of the list for any proper ale heads.

5. Infinite Session IPA (0.5%)

When we first tasted the IPA from London’s specialist AF brewers Infinite Session, we thought we’d picked up a full strength beer. It’s so full-bodied and smooth, you’re barely able to tell the difference - that ‘emptiness’ that can spoil the taste of other alcohol-free options just isn’t there. To bolster a lovely strong flavour, it’s also dry hopped to give it a bold citrus tang on top, resulting in an almost flawless recreation of the real thing. Any IPA fans must try this if they’re looking to reduce their booze intake without compromising on flavour - it’s a triumph.
