As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, we wanted to shine a light on some of the world’s best Disco DJs from across the community (in our humble opinion) – who have been lighting up dancefloors and inspiring people the world over for the last few decades.

These DJs are not only at the top of their game when it comes to song selection, but have also been pioneering forces in their own right – helping to shape and share queer club culture, influencing music and minds from London to Sydney.

Here are our five favourites, and you can catch some of them spinning their tunes in Cambridge this summer!

Jodie Harsh

Jodie Harsh is the London producer, songwriter, remixer and DJ icon – and arguably the reigning Queen-supreme over international nightlife. Her myriad influences stem primarily from Disco, early 90s House music and the Vouge Ball scene.

Famous for her trademark blonde beehive and thumping DJ sets at nightclubs, festivals and A-List parties, Harsh spins on all four corners of the globe. Beyonce, Fergie, Cher and Justin Timberlake have had the Harsh treatment on remixes – which include three #1 records on the US Billboard Dance Charts.

Jodie is a fashion Icon and has been at the heart of London’s flourishing and diverse nightlife scene for over a decade. She has DJ-ed all over the globe, from private parties for Madonna to opening up for the Spice Girls at Wembley.

Sharon White

Sharon White is one of the architects of the House and Disco scene. She was a key figure of the New York club scene in the 70s and 80s that cultivated Dance music, where she learnt her craft in some of the world’s most iconic nightclubs – including Studio 54, Palladium and The Roxy.

Being a queer black woman back then, Sharon was no stranger to set backs due to her race and sexuality – but her tenacity, resilience, and sheer talent propelled her to legendary DJ status,

She was the first woman to headline at the world-famous Paradise Garage in NYC, and continues to be booked the world over to this day – a true pioneer in every sense.

Fat Tony

Fat Tony has played for some of the biggest names in show business over the years – including the likes of Luther Vandross, Madonna, Prince, Sade and Boy George. He has also been an immovable pillar of London’s club kid scene since the 80s, in between crossing over to the home of Disco, New York – playing at clubs like Palladium, and hanging out in Paradise Garage with Dianna Ross (not a bad clubbing buddy!).

Tony is one of the world's best song selectors, matching an impeccable taste in music with expert dance-inducing timing –and has become deservedly renowned across Dance music’s genres and scenes, from Disco to Acid House.

In more recent times, his Instagram account has kept him connected to a younger generation of fans – growing into one of the industry’s favourite meme pages (not for the easily offended, we must warn…)

Horse Meat Disco

Horse Meat Disco, like the other amazing artists in this blog, have been inspired by the music and inclusive ethos of the New York Club scene of the 70s and 80s. The group was formed in 2004 – with an intention of bringing these original Disco vibes back to London’s queer club culture.

The group have since gone on to have nightclub residencies London, as well as Lisbon and Berlin – with shows that have been graced by the likes of Mick Jagger to Marc Almond.

Their international appeal has also seen them booked to share the party all across the world – from Glastonbury Festival to San Francisco Pride – with their sets and parties providing an unmatched atmosphere of a glorious yesteryear.

You can catch the HMD boys in our brand new After Dark ‘Party Time Continuum’ area at this year’s CC Festival!

Honey Dijon

DJ, Producer, Fashion Icon, Activist – Honey Dijon is known for her multi-genre sets, and multi-industry movements. Born in Chicago – the home of house music – she moved to NYC, where she was a key feature of underground club culture. Honey came from a musical family, with her parents being avid fans of R&B and Soul music.

Her own sounds slide effortlessly through Disco, House and Techno – seeing her play some of the world’s coolest clubs, such as the Panorama Bar in Berlin’s infamous Berghain, to fashion week after parties, and the biggest festivals on the planet.

Honey spins her stuff on the Strawberries & Creem stage this year – on the same site as CC Festival, the preceding weekend!
