Our 5 Favourites: ODYSSEY songs

Disco legends ODYSSEY are bringing the party to the CC main stage in what promises to be an energetic and boogie-licious experience…🎵🔥

Of all the groups that arrived on the soul & disco scene during the 70s, none was more exciting than Odyssey. Join us on this week's installment of Our Five Favourites, honouring one of our most-loved bands.

1. Native New Yorker (1977)

The bustling groove and fabulous arrangement of the group’s break-through hit Native New Yorker –matched with humbling, true-to-life lyrics celebrating New York life – helped to establish Odyssey as one of the greatest soul bands of their era. We still love it to this day, and can’t wait to dance to it this summer!

2. Going Back To My Roots (1981)

Odyssey’s anthemic version of Going Back to My Roots is a masterclass in how to build musical tension, energy and excitement. It begins with a thrilling piano riff; then comes the bass drum, a spiky guitar, string-synths and percussion, layer upon layer. One of the most typical and formative soul-funk-dance-pop singles of the 80s, it’s still a favourite of DJs today and crosses generations. Hard not to feel nostalgic listening to this one!

3. Use It Up And Wear It Out (1980)

Topping the charts with the timeless Use It Up And Wear It Out, this energetic disco track was Odyssey's first No.1 single in the UK. A true example of just how good the mixing of soul, Caribbean-influenced rhythms and a disco-y ‘four to the floor’ beat can be - an instant classic! Maybe one of the top contenders for their opening track in June?

4. Hang Together (1980)

Their third album and its title track Hang Together is a classy dance hit. Its downbeat lyrics deal with the problems in society at the time, but somehow its energy sends you straight for the dance floor. Beautifully combining R&B, Pop and some slick dance, this cracking tune also returned Odyssey to the charts in both the US and the UK.

5. Inside Out (1982)

Sisters Lillian and Louise Lopez applied their distinctive vocals to another classic soul-dance track to create our final choice, the silky smooth Inside Out. Their mix of soul, disco, jazz and pop makes this track something very special, demonstrating Odyssey´s versatility, and taking the band’s music into a category of its own.

How’s that for a warm up for this summers’s festival?! Join us for a musical Odyssey on Sunday 11th June…
