Our 5 Favourites: Sophie Ellis-Bextor songs

GLITZ, glamour and Disco hits – plus she does live performances from her very own kitchen…

Join us as we dive into our five favourites from the pop princess that is SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR, ahead of her CC show this summer!

1. Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)

Every once in a while, a track comes along which is destined to be a song that eternally gets people onto the dancefloor. With Sophie’s unmistakable vocals, Spiller’s noughties dance classic Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) is undoubtedly one of those tracks. It still gets the remix respect it deserves today, with Purple Disco Machine most recently giving it a new treatment – but regardless of the reworking, it’s always the iconic vocals that lead the song. We can’t wait for this one live at CC!

2. Murder On The Dancefloor

Arguably Sophie’s signature hit and her most popular song, Murder On The Dancefloor is a tune that EVERYONE knows. The catchy track paired with story-telling lyrics makes this one for the repeat button, and another that never gets old. It comes complete with a great music video too – showing the singer in a dance competition and eliminating other contestants with whatever she can get her hands on! Worth a watch.

3. Crying At The Discotheque

Crying At The Discotheque brings us to the later releases from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and her brilliant new material is one of the reasons we continue to love her. Released in 2020, this upbeat track sees Sophie display her typical sound and distinctive voice over a great instrumental – paying homage to 80s Disco with the recognisable sample from classic Spacer. We can’t wait to sing along on the Saturday night! (but with tears of joy, of course).

4. Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)

Instantly grabbing you with its throbbing beats and quivering synths, Ellis-Bextor's distinctive voice sounds both mournful and strangely happy as she begs: "Love stop getting me down, down, down." Beautiful vocals and a dancefloor-ready track that complements them, from expert beat builders Free Masons – Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer) is made for grooving in a festival field. It’s summery, infectious and one of our all time favourites.

5. Get Over You

Last but not least, the toe-tapper Get Over You. It bursts into life with a distorted Ay-ay-ay-ay”, making the track instantly recognisable and keeping it stuck in our heads since it was first released. A bit more for the hardcore fans than some of the others on our list, this is a truly underrated tune. We hope it makes it into Sophie’s set at CC!

An incredible singer, elegant and glamorous, with the spirit of Disco at the heart of her work – we can’t wait to welcome Sophie to our stage on Saturday 10th June! A fabulous, feel-good show and not to be missed… 💕
